Throughout the month of February, we're focusing on creating and producing documentary films. We sat down with Award winning documentary filmmaker Saeed Taji Farouky and discussed his career and experiences of making documentaries.
In this video, Saeed gives us an overview of the funding landscape for documentaries. “There is a reason why biopics of famous people are popular in documentary because you can just fund them on the basis of access and the plot, and on top of that we know the story, so it’s easier to write the script and know what you’re going to shoot.” When it comes to observational or experimental documentaries, funding is more gradual and comes from a variety of sources. “The funding is much more cumulative. There are funds that are specific for development and creating a proof of concept.’
